(Monrovia, Liberia, June 23, 2026) – The Acting Chief Medical Officer of the Republic of Liberia, Dr. Teyah Sackie Moore, has praised the Government of India and its Embassy in Liberia for promoting wellness and preventive healthcare through the observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY-2026), describing yoga as an effective and affordable tool for improving physical and mental health.
Speaking on behalf of Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto at a ceremony held at the Monrovia City Corporation, Dr. Moore emphasized the importance of holistic health approaches in addressing growing public health challenges, including non-communicable diseases and stress-related disorders.
The annual event, organized by the Embassy of India in Liberia, brought together government officials, diplomats, healthcare professionals, and members of the public to celebrate the global practice of yoga and its contribution to healthy living.
“I wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Embassy of India for organizing this event and for the continued partnership in promoting global health and wellness,” Dr. Moore said.
He noted that the International Day of Yoga is more than a cultural celebration, serving as a reminder to embrace a comprehensive approach to health and well-being.
According to Dr. Moore, scientific evidence continues to demonstrate the benefits of yoga in improving physical fitness, enhancing mental clarity, and supporting emotional well-being.
He said such practices complement Liberia’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare system by encouraging individuals to take greater responsibility for their own health.
“In a world where we are increasingly confronted with non-communicable diseases and stress-related disorders, yoga offers a low-cost, accessible solution,” he told participants.
Dr. Moore further observed that the principles of yoga align with Liberia’s vision of building a healthier nation through prevention, wellness, and healthy lifestyles.
“The theme and practice of yoga today align perfectly with our vision for a healthier Liberia. It encourages us to breathe better, think clearer, and live more peacefully,” he said.
He urged participants to actively engage in the day’s activities and to incorporate the values of balance, discipline, and mindfulness into their daily routines.
The Acting Chief Medical Officer also used the occasion to reaffirm Liberia’s commitment to preventive healthcare and public wellness initiatives, stressing that healthy communities are essential to national development and resilience.
The International Day of Yoga, established by the United Nations in 2014 and observed annually on June 21, seeks to raise awareness of the many benefits of yoga and encourage healthier lifestyles worldwide.
