UNICEF Deputy Country Representative Assesses Health Interventions in Grand Gedeh

(Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County – April 1, 2025) The Deputy Country Representative of UNICEF, Dr. Amadou Cisse, has concluded a strategic visit to Grand Gedeh County, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to improving health, nutrition, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services. During his visit, Dr. Cisse met with the Grand Gedeh County Health Team (CHT) and key stakeholders to assess the progress of UNICEF-supported programs and identify gaps that require urgent intervention. Discussions covered immunization, nutrition, birth registration, reproductive health, and community health services—critical areas for enhancing child and maternal well-being in the county. The Grand Gedeh County Health Team reported that the county has successfully maintained a steady vaccine supply, ensuring uninterrupted immunization efforts.

The county’s National Community Health Program has made significant strides in reducing cases of malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea, thanks to the dedicated efforts of 218 Community Health Assistants (CHAs) and their supervisors. Additionally, birth registration remains a priority, with six digitalized centers recording over 2,600 births in 2024.  In reproductive health, UNICEF’s partnership with MCAI has provided specialized neonatal training for clinicians, while Buddy Clubs in schools continue to educate adolescents on reproductive health and wellness.

Dr. Cisse also conducted a field assessment of rehabilitated and newly constructed WASH facilities in Zwedru, including Child-Friendly Schools and the Gboleken Clinic. He reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to strengthening health, nutrition, and sanitation services in Grand Gedeh County, ensuring that essential interventions reach the most vulnerable populations.

The Ministry of Health expressed its gratitude to the UNICEF delegation, led by Dr. Cisse, for visiting rural parts of Liberia to assess the current state of health services. The Ministry also extended its heartfelt appreciation to UNICEF for its continued dedication to improving healthcare delivery and supporting the government’s efforts to achieve universal health coverage for all Liberians.
