(January 19, 2025, Monrovia, Liberia) — The Ministry of Health (MOH), through its Health Information System (HIS) Unit and in collaboration with key partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), Global Fund, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), USAID, World Food Programme (WFP), Management Sciences for Health (MSH), and Plan International Liberia, on Friday January 17, 2025, concluded a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on Health Information System (HIS) reporting and recording tools. The workshop, held at the Ministry of Health in Congo Town from January 13–17, 2025, aimed to equip 15 county-level supervisors with the skills necessary to effectively utilize HIS tools, such as the ledger and HMIS. This training was also intended to strengthen the collection of routine, functional data critical for monitoring the Health Sector Strategic and Development Plan, supporting decision-making, and evaluating the country’s healthcare delivery system. At the opening of the training, Hon. Malayah T. Chieyoe, Deputy Minister for Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of collaboration and commitment in building a resilient health system. Hon. Chieyoe described the HIS program as a transformative initiative designed to enhance data-driven decision-making for improved health outcomes. “An efficient HIS is not just about data collection but about transforming that data into actionable insights that guide decision-making and improve health services,” said Deputy Minister Chieyoe.
The Minister acknowledged the event’s significance as a collective effort, stating, “Today’s event underscores our shared commitment to building a robust system that ensures timely, accurate, and comprehensive data. This rollout represents the culmination of meticulous planning, collaboration, and dedication.” He further urged participants to take ownership of the system’s success, cautioning the role of proper training, consistent application, and maintaining data integrity. He also expressed gratitude to development partners, technical teams, and other stakeholders for their invaluable support in achieving this milestone. “As we embark on this rollout, let us remember the vital role we all play in ensuring its success. From proper training to consistent use and from maintaining data integrity to robust analysis, the responsibility lies with all of us to make this system a cornerstone of our health sector,” she added. The ToT workshop has enabled participants to become proficient in HIS reporting and recording processes. They are also equipped to train others in data collection and reporting, ultimately contributing to improved accountability, health service delivery, and better health outcomes for communities.
