MOH Concludes Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign

Monrovia – The Ministry of Health through its Montserrado County Health Team led by the Montserrado County Health Officer Dr. Jewel Kollie, has successfully concluded a month-long cervical cancer awareness campaign targeting high schools, universities, clinics, hospitals, and churches. The campaign aims to educate the public on cervical and breast cancer prevention, improve access to life-saving screenings, and promote early detection which is crucial to saving lives. The awareness also highlighted the importance of the HPV vaccination of children between the ages of 9-14 years. The awareness campaign highlighted the importance of regular cancer screenings, particularly for women aged 30–60, as cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related death. “We are leveraging this awareness campaign to enhance proactive patient engagement, ensuring that routine medical visits become opportunities for impactful education and trust-building,” Dr. Kollie noted. As part of its continued commitment to cancer awareness, Liberia recently joined other countries around the world to observe World Cancer Day 2025, reinforcing the need for collaboration among government agencies, healthcare providers, organizations, and individuals in the fight against cancer.

The County Health Officer (CHO) for Montserrado County also highlighted the critical role of early detection in improving survival rates, she urged every Liberian to join the fight to reduce the cancer burden by making informed health choices, encouraging regular screenings, vaccination, and advocating for better healthcare policies which are key in eliminating cervical Cancer across the country. “Early-stage cervical cancer (Stages 1A, 1B, 2A) is highly treatable. However, locally advanced cases (Stages 2B, 3, 4A) require more intensive treatment, and advanced-stage cervical cancer (Stage 4B) remains a significant challenge,” Dr. Kollie stated as she encourages women between the ages 25- 60 to take advantage of the free cervical cancer screenings which will be available at 4 major health facilities (JFK hospital, Redemption Hospital, JDJ hospital, and the Duport Road Health Center). The free cervical cancer screenings will run from February 19-28, 2025. The Ministry of Health is currently providing accessible screening services, with a focus on detecting cancer at its earliest stages to reduce mortality. This effort aligns with global health strategies that emphasize early intervention and patient education, making awareness and regular screenings vital in the fight against this deadly cancer. The Ministry is committed to enhancing public awareness, expanding screening programs, and improving vaccine coverage nationwide
