MOH Holds Sensitization Meeting with Legislative Committees on Health

Monrovia, Liberia — The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with key stakeholders, hosted a strategic breakfast sensitization meeting with relevant House of Representatives and Senate committees to discuss domestic financing for family planning and maternal health. The meeting was organized under the theme: “United for Progress: Accelerating Progress in Expanding Family Planning Coverage in Liberia.” This high-level engagement aimed to strengthen Liberia’s policymakers’ commitment to the critical need for increased budgetary allocation to family planning (FP) and maternal health services. The discussions centered on the dividends of family planning and its significant impact on national development. Improved maternal and child health outcomes; promotion of gender equality and economic empowerment; environmental sustainability and population productivity; and reduction in unsafe abortions and increased school retention were key areas discussed during the meeting. Other focused points during the meeting included:  advocacy for a sustainable financial mechanism to support FP services and commodities; the benefits of FP in advancing Liberia’s socio-economic development;  reduction in maternal mortality through the prevention of unintended pregnancies and complications during childbirth; improving infant health by ensuring adequate spacing between pregnancies; empowering women with greater control over their reproductive choices;  enhancing women’s opportunities for education and career development and enabling families to plan for the number of children they can support. Investing in family planning and maternal health is investing in Liberia’s future. The Ministry of Health reiterates its commitment to partnering with policymakers, communities, and stakeholders to expand family planning coverage and improve the health and well-being of all Liberians. Together, we can accelerate progress and ensure sustainable development.
