World Bank Mission Reviews Progress on IFISH, Health Security Projects in Liberia

A World Bank delegation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other line ministries, has launched a ten-day review of the Institutional Foundations to Improve Services for Health (IFISH) and the Health Security Project (HeSP), which are being implemented under the One Health Platform. The review began September 22nd and will end October 3rd, 2025.

The mission assessed progress made under the two projects, which aim to strengthen Liberia’s healthcare system, enhance preparedness, and improve service delivery.

During the review meeting, the projects’ One Health Platform revealed several milestones, including the construction of the New Redemption Hospital, which is now 82.16% complete. The date scheduled for completion is December 2025. The facility will include housing and educational facilities, and will be equipped with modern diagnostic infrastructure such as CT-scan and MRI.

Further progress under the projects includes the completion of a national health worker census to inform the development of a comprehensive workforce strategy and policy. Thirty-four (34) specialized nurses sponsored under the project have graduated and are now ready for deployment, while an additional batch of 18 nurses will begin two years of advanced training in Kenya commencing October 2025.

The World Bank, through the Ministry of Health, is expected to commence the construction of three (3) nursing skill laboratories in Bomi, Lofa, and Grand Gedeh counties.

The World Bank Mission also identifies steady progress in the construction of 12 primary health facilities across six counties.

The IFISH project has made several donations to World Bank-supported facilities, including essential medicines, reproductive and maternal health products, community health commodities, vaccines, and medical equipment. In addition, healthcare providers have benefited from extensive training in sexual and reproductive health services, contributing to improved maternal and neonatal outcomes in the supported counties.

As part of the review, the delegation conducted field assessments at the New Redemption Hospital construction site in Caldwell, the Environmental Protection Agency Laboratory in Mamba Point, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia.

The mission highlighted that these achievements reflect Liberia’s capacity to deliver essential health services, reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, and prepare for future health threats.

The One Health Platform comprises the Ministry of Health, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
