(Monrovia, Liberia, December 14, 2025)—The Ministry of Health (MOH), through its National Eye Health Program and in collaboration with Sightsavers, has established the National Eye Health Steering Committee as a major step toward strengthening eye care service delivery nationwide. The committee serves as the highest multi-sectoral governance and leadership body for the prevention of blindness and the promotion of visual health across all counties, ensuring accountability, sustainability, and coordinated implementation of the National Eye Health Strategy.
The Steering Committee is mandated to harmonize all national, sub-national, and partner-led eye health activities in line with the 2022–2032 National Eye Health Strategic Plan. Its responsibilities include mobilizing and overseeing domestic and external funding, ensuring transparent and accountable use of resources, holding stakeholders and implementing partners accountable, and championing the integration of eye health across the health, finance, education, and social sectors. Speaking at the inaugural meeting, Dr. Moley Goe, Director of the National Eye Health Program, emphasized that the initiative aims to protect citizens from avoidable blindness and ensure equitable, quality, and accessible eye care services, while Sightsavers Country Director, Mr. Balla Musa Joff, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the Ministry.
The committee is composed of senior representatives from key government ministries, public institutions, and civil society organizations, including the Ministries of Finance, Education, and Gender, the National Commission on Disabilities, JFK Memorial Hospital, and the Press Union of Liberia, with MOH providing leadership. Its work aligns with the Eye Health Policy and Strategic Plan (2022–2032), adopted in September 2023, which supports Universal Health Coverage and WHO global eye care targets. The policy prioritizes access and equity for vulnerable populations, workforce development, improved facilities and health information systems, expanded outreach services, and strengthened multi-sectoral collaboration in line with Liberia’s Vision 2030.
