(Monrovia, Liberia, July 31, 2025)— The Ministry of Health (MOH), through its Extended AID Program and with support from Expertise France, held a two-day workshop from July 29-30, 2025. The event brought together stakeholders from across the health system, including representatives of county health teams, non-governmental organizations, and development partners, under the theme: “From Reflection to Action: Strengthening Coordination and Oversight at the Ministry of Health.”
The workshop focused on enhancing internal and external communication, improving coordination mechanisms, and developing an actionable roadmap for more evidence-based and efficient decision-making in Liberia’s health delivery system.
Key objectives included developing a comprehensive implementation action plan, creating a monitoring and evaluation framework, and reinforcing the functionality of health boards. Participants also sought to strengthen coordination between the Ministry, county health teams, and partner organizations through a structured feedback system.
In his opening remarks, Assistant Minister for Planning and Research, George P. Jacobs, welcomed participants and underscored the longstanding gaps in information sharing within the Ministry of Health, challenges that have persisted across multiple presidential administrations. “We’ve realized that without strong coordination, our efforts remain fragmented. When things are well coordinated, we can use limited resources to achieve a lot more. That is why this workshop is crucial; it’s time to sit together, reflect, and act on improving communication and oversight.”
Assistant Minister Jacobs officially declared the workshop open on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Louise Mapleh Kpoto, emphasizing that the outcomes would guide a structured, efficient, and unified approach to delivering health services across the country.
Throughout the two-day session, facilitators and participants are engaging in collaborative discussions and breakout sessions. Together, they are drafting strategies to enhance internal coordination platforms and communication pathways within the MOH; strengthen feedback loops between the Ministry, county health teams, and NGOs; improve information-sharing protocols and knowledge dissemination; and ensure monitoring frameworks are in place to track progress, highlight challenges, and offer timely recommendations.
The workshop also addresses how decentralized health structures can be better integrated with central planning processes, a necessary step toward realizing a unified health system capable of responding to national needs.
