MOH Develops Guidelines to Manage Sickle Cell Disease, Hypertension, Asthma in Liberia

(Monrovia, Liberia, March 26, 2025)—To strengthen and manage hypertension, sickle cell disease, asthma, and other forms of non-communicable diseases and injuries in the Country, the Non-communicable Diseases and Injuries Program of the Ministry of Health has commenced a 3-day protocols development workshop. The event is sponsored by partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Partners in Health (PIH), Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and the World Diabetes Foundation.

The workshop aims to develop a standardized, evidence-based national treatment protocol to ensure effective management and improve patient outcomes across various healthcare facilities—ensuring equitable access to care for individuals suffering from these chronic conditions and enhancing overall healthcare service delivery. It gathered medical experts, healthcare professionals, and international health organizations to ensure the protocols were both context-specific and evidence-based. In her welcome remarks, Assistant Minister for Preventative Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Calleau J Howe, highlighted the impacts of Sickle cell Disease, Hypertension and Asthma in Liberia and encouraged participants to take ownership of the working session and make all necessary inputs that will bring positive charges in managing these conditions in the country. “At the Ministry of Health, we are doing everything possible in all areas to bring a change. However, to make our efforts more holistic, we need a protocol that guides us regardless of our geographical location,” Dr. Howe added.

She attached importance to the protocol development and encouraged participants at the event to focus “so that we can have a successful end result that will be shared with other health care professionals.” Upon its completion, the protocol is expected to be disseminated through the training of healthcare workers across the country, ensuring that they are accessible and utilized appropriately.
