Monrovia, November 20, 2024 – The Montserrado County Health Team has received a major boost in healthcare delivery following a donation of surgical equipment valued at 217,961.16 Euros from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).  The supplies, delivered through MSF’s Monrovia Project, are designated for establishing the first operating theater at the Du-port Road Health Center. During the handover ceremony, Mr. Sonny Israel, MSF Monrovia Project Coordinator, emphasized the importance of equipping health facilities to meet the growing demand for surgical services in Liberia. “This initiative reflects MSF’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s health sector. It will not only address the urgent need for surgical services but also contribute to reducing maternal mortality and neonatal deaths,” he stated.

Dr. Jewel Tarpeh-Kollie, County Health Officer (CHO) of Montserrado, expressed gratitude to MSF for the donation. She narrated  the transformative impact it will have on the Du-port Road Health Center, which serves a population of over 12,000 people. The facility has long faced challenges due to the absence of an operating theater, resulting in numerous referrals to other facilities, including the John F Kennedy Medical Center. “The donation will significantly enhance the health center’s capacity to provide life-saving surgical care, especially for maternal cases. We have already prepared space for the theater, and we are optimistic that operations will begin by early 2025,” Dr. Tarpeh-Kollie disclosed. This development is expected to reduce delays in surgical care, improve patient outcomes, and strengthen public health infrastructure in the county. The Ministry of Health has commended MSF for its continued partnership and unwavering support in advancing Liberia’s healthcare system.
