(Monrovia, November 19, 2024)– The Ministry of Health is pleased to join the global community in commemorating World Toilet Day 2024, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of sanitation and hygiene for public health, environmental sustainability, and human dignity. This year’s global theme, “Toilet – A Place for Peace,” and Liberia’s national theme, “Every Toilet Counts – Leave No One Behind,” highlights the urgent need for sustainable sanitation solutions. With 35% of Liberians practicing open defecation, inadequate sanitation remains a challenge that threatens health, social stability, and economic development. The official celebration is hosted today, November 19, 2024, at the Ministerial Complex in Montserrado County, bringing together government officials, international partners, NGOs, and community leaders. Expert panels will address urban and rural sanitation challenges, share success stories, and explore innovative financing models for sanitation. Personal stories from affected individuals will show the human impact of poor sanitation, fostering empathy and collective action. Partner organizations will display ongoing projects and innovations that address Liberia’s sanitation crisis, inspiring collaboration and action. The Ministry of Health calls on all Liberians to embrace this year’s theme and commit to building a healthier, more equitable society. Together, we can achieve an Open Defecation Free (ODF) Liberia and ensure access to safe sanitation for all by 2030.
