Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, July 18, 2026 | The Ministry of Health of Liberia, through the Division of Vital Statistics, is proudly participating in the 2026 Annual Expert Group Meeting for Registrar Generals (EGMRG) on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, from July 17–21, 2026.
The continental meeting, convened under the theme “New CRVS Decade (2026–2036): Consolidating the Gains of APAI-CRVS and Securing the Future of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Africa through Integration, Decentralization, and Digitalization,” brings together Registrar Generals, policymakers, technical experts, and development partners from across Africa to shape the future of CRVS systems on the continent.
Representing Liberia, Dr. Anthony L. Fortune, Assistant Minister for Vital Statistics, delivered a country presentation highlighting Liberia’s ten-year CRVS journey, showcasing the nation’s achievements, lessons learned, and vision for the next decade.
During the session, Liberia will share its progress in strengthening birth and death registration through policy reforms, digital transformation, improved collaboration between the health sector and the National Identification Registry, decentralization of birth registration services, and stronger partnerships with national and international stakeholders.
Liberia will also outline its priorities for 2026–2036, including expanding digital registration, improving death registration and cause-of-death reporting, enhancing interoperability with national systems, and ensuring universal access to civil registration services.
The meeting provides an important platform for peer learning and collaboration, with countries exchanging experiences on integrating CRVS with health, education, social protection, and national identity systems while advancing digital public infrastructure across Africa.
The discussions will contribute to the development of the Continental Action Plan for the New CRVS Decade (2026–2036) and inform preparations for the Sixth Conference of African Ministers Responsible for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (COM6).
The Ministry of Health under the leadership of the Honorable Minister, Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, remains committed to working with national and international partners to strengthen Liberia’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system, recognizing that complete, timely, and reliable registration of vital events is essential for legal identity, effective governance, evidence-based planning, and improved health outcomes for all Liberians.
