(Ganta, Nimba County, December 6, 2025)—Liberia has taken a major step toward strengthening pharmaceutical governance with the convening of a workshop in Ganta, Nimba County, aimed at establishing the National Medicine and Therapeutics Committee (NMTC).
The three-day event brought together key health-sector stakeholders and partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Global Fund, Plan International, Africa CDC, the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA), the Liberia Pharmacy Board (LPB), the School of Pharmacy (SOP), the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC), and the National Medicines Bureau (NMB).
Organized by the Ministry of Health through its Division of Pharmaceutical Services, with support from Plan International, the workshop served as a formal platform to establish the foundational architecture of the NMTC. Participants drafted the committee’s Terms of Reference (TOR), developed operational frameworks for national, county, and facility levels, and outlined clear steps for endorsement and implementation.
Discussions highlighted the need for evidence-based decision-making in the selection, use, and oversight of medicines, an essential pillar for quality healthcare delivery.
Once fully operational, the NMTC is expected to enhance Liberia’s health system by promoting the rational use of medicines, strengthening patient safety mechanisms, and ensuring national pharmaceutical practices are aligned with international standards. Stakeholders expressed confidence that the committee will play a transformative role in improving access to safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare across the country.
