MOH Convenes Community Health Entrepreneurship Program to Strengthen Last-Mile Care

(Monrovia, Liberia, April 22, 2026)The Ministry of Health has convened a three-day strategic workshop in Monrovia to lay the groundwork for the Community Health Worker (CHW) entrepreneurship program, designed to improve sustainability and service delivery across the country.

The National Community Health Program (NCHP), a flagship initiative of the Ministry, is hosting the start-up workshop from April 21 to 23, bringing together government officials, development partners, and technical stakeholders to design a model that officials say could redefine how community health systems are financed and managed.

The exercise is being implemented in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services and Last Mile Health, alongside the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, with financial and technical backing from UNICEF and the Mastercard Foundation.

The Director of the NCHP, S. Olasford Wiah, said the workshop is a major step toward securing long-term sustainability for Liberia’s community health architecture.

Director Wiah expressed gratitude to partners for selecting Liberia as a beneficiary of the initiative.

He underscored the strategic importance of the program, noting that it aligns with continental efforts led through engagements between the Africa CDC and member states to strengthen community health systems and create durable, locally driven solutions.

“This initiative represents a pathway toward sustainability,” Wiah said, pointing to the evolving role of community health workers not only as service providers but as actors within a broader economic and social support system.

The entrepreneurship strategy will be rolled out nationwide through a phased approach, beginning with Region One counties, Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, and Gbarpolu, before expanding to other parts of the country.

The phased implementation is intended to allow for piloting, learning, and adaptation prior to full-scale deployment.

Over the course of three days, participants are expected to interrogate key components of the program’s design, including the results framework, accountability structures, and operational tools required for implementation. Central to the discussions are the development of feedback and grievance redress mechanisms, as well as the standardization of reporting templates and data collection systems.
