CMO Engages Private Health Facilities to Strengthen Maternal and Child Health Collaboration

(Monrovia, Liberia, June 19, 2025) – The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Republic of Liberia, Dr. Catherine T. Cooper today convened a strategic meeting with representatives of private health facilities across Liberia to strengthen collaboration in delivering improved health services, with a particular emphasis on maternal and child health. The meeting brought together health administrators, clinicians, and program managers from private hospitals and clinics, alongside senior Ministry officials and technical leads from key public health programs.

Delivering the opening remarks, Dr. Cooper welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of synergy between the public and private health sectors in addressing national health priorities. “Improving maternal and child health outcomes requires a united front,” Dr. Cooper stated. “The private sector plays a crucial role in delivering services, and today’s dialogue is about building trust, transparency, and shared accountability as we work toward achieving universal health coverage.” She noted that the Ministry is committed to promoting inclusive partnerships that ensure equitable access to life-saving services, especially in underserved communities.

Dr. Cooper also presented recent health sector performance data, identifying critical gaps and priority areas for private sector engagement. Discussions during the meeting centered on four key thematic areas: Maternal and Child Health, HIV/TB Services, Immunization, and Malaria Prevention and Control.

Dr. Cooper thanked attendees for their active participation and reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for continued engagement. “Let us build on today’s conversation to implement practical solutions that make a real difference in the lives of our people,” she said. “Together, we can deliver a stronger, more responsive health system.” The meeting represents a renewed effort by the Ministry to ensure that all health actors (public and private) are aligned in their mission to provide quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare for every Liberian. At the meeting, interactive exchanges were held with private health actors on how best to integrate services, share data, and improve patient outcomes.

In separate remarks, the participants recommended the need for strengthened private sector involvement in routine malaria surveillance and the distribution of preventive treatment for pregnant women and children under five.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to develop a Joint Plan of Action that will guide collaboration and coordination between the Ministry and private health providers. Participants agreed to work closely on data sharing, service quality improvement and joint outreach campaigns.
