Liberia celebrates World Blood Donor Day
Program marking the celebration of World Blood Donor Day took place last month under the theme “Blood connects us all”.
The celebration brought together students and community residents in a series of sporting events in the Somalia Drive on Bushrod Island.
In a special message read on his behalf, the Regional Director for Africa of the World Health Organization, Dr. Mashidiso Moti attributed the shortage of blood in most counties in the African Region to the weak implementation of policies and lack of systems and structures to ensure an adequate supply of safe blood and blood productions for meeting the needs of all patients requiring the transfusion.
Dr. Moeti also indicated that most young people and adults have not yet embraced the culture of voluntarism when it comes to blood donation.
The WHO regional Director for Africa also expressed gratitude on behalf of WHO to all voluntary unpaid blood donors for their regular blood donation and further thanked the blood donor associations, nongovernmental organizations and volunteer groups which are working alongside the Ministry of Health to make safe blood available throughout the country.
For her part, the Program Manager of the Blood Bank, Mrs. Lwopu M. Bruce encouraged the culture of blood donation and said blood transfusion helps to save many lives around the world. She also thanked the partners for their many support to the National Blood Bank of Liberia.
